Here, we’ve put together some useful information for volunteers, or for people who would like to volunteer their time but want to know what’s involved first.
What would I be volunteering for?
Volunteer activities range from transporting (Transcall) visually impaired people; befriending people at home; supporting whilst attending the eye clinic; to helping out in one of the clubs.
Are there any Social Clubs?
There are a range of clubs meeting weekly and monthly during weekdays and at weekends at various times of the day and evening.
Are there any Administrative Opportunities?
The Resource Centre offers general administrative duties and reception work as well as telephone and retail work.
What support would I get?
Once you start your work you will be linked to one of our Volunteer Managers who will give you information and support whenever you may require it.
The Transcall operator will be your link person when transport is being arranged.
Will I be insured?
Our volunteers are insured against claims made against them for negligence, providing they are engaged upon tasks allocated to them by the CIB, and by observing the normally expected precautions when responsible for the care of the person in their charge.
The implications of this are that you should inform, and have the approval of the CIB before changing your role in relation to volunteering.
Our volunteers must have 3rd party liability or comprehensive insurance cover on their vehicle if it is used to carry passengers during volunteer work for the CIB. It is advisable to notify the insurance company that the vehicle is being used for voluntary work.
A donation of £2.45 each single journey up to five miles and 45p per mile thereafter is given to the volunteer by the visually impaired passenger.
Very rarely a situation arises that will need your immediate attention, car accident, a fall or sudden illness. If any of these incidents occur, then please contact CIB on Cardiff (029) 2048 5414 or the out of office number, after you have taken immediate steps to rectify the situation.
Our policy is that if you are unable to gain a reply, or for some reason the passenger is not around for the pick-up
DO NOT walk or drive away, but,
1. If possible, check with the neighbours.
2. Check with Transcall on Cardiff (029) 2047 3573 or CIB in case there has been a last minute change in arrangements.
Our volunteers are aware of the importance of not betraying any confidence that may have been entrusted with and that it is essential for them to follow the guidelines laid out by CIB.
Our volunteers always inform us if they change their:-
- Phone number
- Car insurance
or if they are unable to turn up.
