For nearly 150 years, Cardiff Institute for the Blind has worked in partnership with a wide range of organisations to ensure people with any type or level of sight loss can enjoy fulfilled lives in their community and beyond.
On this page you can find details about what we do.
We have a member of staff called at Eye Clinic Liaison Officer (ECLO) at the University Hospital of Wales eye clinic in Cardiff, who is on hand to help people diagnosed with sight loss. At this very difficult time, they can provide advice and support or just be there to listen. RNIB Cymru and others employ ECLOs in other health board areas.
Information, advice & signposting
We provide general and tailored information, advice and signposting by telephone, email, printed newsletters and going out into the community.
Social & support groups
Our busy club and social calendar covers a range of interests and is a great way to meet new people and try out new things. We always welcome new members. Click here for more information.
Products and gadgets
There are many products available to make everyday life easier and more enjoyable for people with sight loss.
We provide advice and support on choosing, using and buying the right products for you. We have a wide selection of products available to try and buy at our centre in Jones Court, Womanby Street, Cardiff. We may also be able to come to your home and give you advice.
We may be able to visit you in your own home to give advice and to inform you about services that you can access. Because we are a small organisation supporting many people, we may not be able to do this immediately.
Information and advice
Contact us for advice and information. We are here to help and signpost you to other organisations that may be able to offer support that’s not necessarily connected to your sight loss. People regularly say that whatever problem they have, we normally find the answer.
The internet and personal computers have opened up a new world for people with sight loss and we provide training and support for people of all ages.
Independence courses & workshops
We provide workshops and courses to help you with shopping, transport, money management and other essential daily living skills.
Access to sport, leisure and interest activities
We support blind and partially sighted people to take part in a whole range of activities. Please click here for more information.
We also work in close partnership with RNIB Cymru on services relating to children and families, education, employment, and welfare benefits advice.
In addition, we work with a wide range of public and third-sector organisations to ensure people with sight loss have a voice in their community and can shape local and national services.
