Cardiff Bus helps to drive up CIB’s fundraising total

Cardiff Bus has donated over £6,000 to Cardiff Institute for the Blind (CIB) after it was chosen as the company’s charity partner for 2014. Cardiff Bus chose CIB after it received the highest number of votes from Cardiff Bus employees to become the company’s charity partner of the year.

Cynthia Ogbonna, managing director at Cardiff Bus, said: “As a large organisation in Cardiff, we believe it is important to help the local community and charities. There are many worthy charities but we have worked with Cardiff Institute for the Blind before and have seen the difference they make to people’s lives and we wanted to help them continue making this difference.

“We are delighted that we have been able to raise a considerable amount of money for the charity, which has been down to the commitment and generosity of our staff. We have many passengers who are partially sighted or blind and we’re glad we have been able to help a charity that enables them to enjoy fulfilled lives.”

Cardiff Bus has run a series of initiatives to support partially sighted and blind people such as taking part in the Royal National Institute for Blind People (RNIB) ‘Stop for me, Speak to me campaign’ which involved drivers boarding a bus and paying for a ticket whilst wearing ‘SIM specs’, glasses that simulate sight impairment. The bus operator also installed next stop audio and visual announcements on its new fleet of buses to help people who have visual and audio impairments.

Kieran Harris, Director of CIB, said: “We’d like to thank the staff at Cardiff Bus for their kind generosity and this donation is a huge boost as we celebrate our 150th anniversary. We rely on the support of organisations in order to continue helping blind and partially sighted people. It’s great to have the support of Cardiff Bus, whose service is much used and appreciated by our service-users. We’re very grateful that we were selected by Cardiff Bus as its official charity partner of the year for 2014. The money raised will make a huge difference to the people we help.”
